SBC market increases, helps drive SIP trunking, VoIP

The global service provider session border controllers market grew by nearly 45 percent in 2010, increasing to $271 million in revenue, according to a new Infonetics Research report. Still, this market is likely to continue increasing as companies demand to be more efficient and mobile, with Infonetics believing it will reach $1 billion by 2015.

"Though traditionally deployed in fixed-line networks for residential and business VoIP service access (including trunking), the use of session border controllers for interconnection between service providers continues to expand as the world's voice networks increasingly go all-IP," said Diane Myers, the directing analyst for VoIP and IMS at Infonetics Research.

Additionally, the study found that SIP trunking is the No. 1 application used by these providers and will likely continue to be so through 2013. Interconnecting to other providers and residential VoIP were the second and third most commonly used services, respectively, according to Infonetics.

Frost & Sullivan revealed that the North American VoIP access and SIP trunking services market is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate of more than 27 percent through 2016, eventually reaching $3.9 billion.
