At Fonality I started from working in support (CE, Pro, PBXtra) to moving to our new HQ and now working as a Channel Sales Engineer to continue helping out our resellers and channel partners who distribute trixbox Pro.

During my transitions I have worked to stay on top of the trixbox community and assist Fonality in determining the next steps with the CE open source platform. Fonality appreciates the passion from the CE community and wants to assure you that Fonality is committed to ongoing support of the CE community. We have been working through community support changes and the development of a new CE release. We are looking forward to the release of trixbox CE (2.8.1) in late Q3 and believe it will serve as a catalyst to more developments within the CE community.

Summary of trixboxCE
• Latest FreePBX 2.9 updates (new PBXconfig RPM package)
• CentOS 5.6 Stable
• Bug fixes (fax to email, other random bugs that were fixed by the FreePBX folks)
• Rebuild of DAHDI/Asterisk tree to work with the new CentOS kernel
• New ISO will have the latest packages
• New YUM repo updated

Future Changes and Opportunities

trixboxCE
The idea behind FONCore last year was to support HUD3 on trixbox CE. Today I'm sure most of you know there are no further dev plans to have HUD3 on CE. HUD 3.5 is available on trixbox Pro and PBXtra products, which offer expanded HUD features including contact center features, queues, linked server support, etc. So I am going to work it out with our engineering team to either go with the latest FONCore that trixbox Pro 5.2 is using or just continue to use the latest Asterisk build that is out there.

trixboxCE Community
We recognize that many of you have had issues with the current site as well as would like to see updated resources and information. I will be working with marketing over the next quarter to make modifications and improvements to the site.

Fonality just completed a brand new site for our unified communication products (hosted and hybrid-hosted products) and the next step (probably also in late Q3) will be to update this site.

For those of you that continue to participate in this project, we thank you for your loyalty and your patience. There are many choices out there for an open source platform. Your feedback and recommendations are being forwarded to product management and marketing and I am working with them on the future of the CE project. Fonality is committed to the CE community and is in the process of evaluating opportunities to improve paid support and the ongoing development to provide you with the best open source platform.

A big thanks goes to Andrew for helping on building the new ISO. The plan I am presenting to the fonality management team is to bring something to trixbox CE that you can't from your other open source choices. Such as an updated version of HUDlite at least? (i'm pushing!)

So yes, this might be just another 'coming soon' post to some of you but actions are better than words...and my next words will have actions next to them, which will be linking you to download page.

Well, it appears the issues

Well, it appears the issues with the forums is at least better, since it didn't take 3 reloads to do this reply.

Is there going to be some type of CE repo opened up to patch agains or is it still just a community support and bug reporting?

Thanks for the update.

ROFL

Let's get real. There is no trixbox community. There is however, a shrinking trixbox user group.

This is how the community user group deals with Fonality.

LOL

Astrosmurfer has it right.

No new releases in over a year? Your really only concerned about your hosted projects rathern then the people that help get you there. I left you a few months back after waiting for an asterisk 1.8 release. Asterisk 1.8 is the only version not scheduled for End Of Life. Yours still has not come to this day, so I moved on to another project. Your only shot is if you come out with 1.8 on cent 6 before the other projects then you may be able to salvage your name. Other then that you guys are SOL.

P.S Please stop forking freepbx. It looks fine the way it is and a huge waste of time..

Dead man walking

Yeah... the only reason I stuck around as long as I did was the expectation of HUD3 on CE. I was willing to pay for HUD3 as HUD is one of the nicer packages out there. However, now that HUD is a pipe dream on CE, I converted over the AsteriskNow. Just as easy to setup, and it appears Digium is much faster at getting updates out there. I mean seriously... tBox CE is just FreePBX anyway... plus a semi-functioning backup module (it works sometimes), and a few other things that are cute. Phone provisioning never got to any great level. The easy install was the real value.

It was fun while it lasted.

FreePBX also has their own

FreePBX also has their own distro.

FreePBX has always included a functioning backup module (why tribox removed it still baffles me).

Now FreePBX has a fully featured end point manager.

Wait until you see what 2.10 has to offer.

trixbox used to be the best distribution of FreePBX and Asterisk. Sad to see it go away.

My own CE experience over the last 5 years.

Anyone who has been reselling or installing Trixbox CE, PBxtra or TB PRO, has seen many changes that has not supported the Channels or helped our customers. We personally gave up on any expectations on TB CE after several years ago when the HUD was nixed after suggesting a pay model over and over again. As for the Software it has so much potential and unfortunately it is competing in the same space next to money producing TB PRo and PBX-tra, dont forget the Hosted Platform that is even mightier. Last couple of months we have seen so many attacks on these asterisk based systems that we had decided we were moving on. We get calls of boxes being owned even though the default passwords have been changed, but because of port 80 being opened so they can check their vm ( also Apache password protected), we decided to move to another flavor where the companies main interest is in the product and does not treat it as an inherited money pit. I can understand CE systems getting hacked because of all the mods and how people set them up, but when I sell a customer a TB PRO and PBXTRA system to my bigger customers and their systems get owned and Fonality support cannot trace how, and we cannot change the damn sip password which happens to be the mac address... then we are no longer on the same page. Siplock should be part of the commercial build and not an expensive addon. Fail2ban is fine for CE but when paying for a commercial grade voip system this should not be my only reasonable solution.

I do not want to take a turd on the ones who put their blood, sweat and tears into Fonality. Some have contributed allot and that has kept us around till now.

As of version 2010.1.19 for

As of version 2010.1.19 for PBXtra (and soon trixbox Pro) there is a built in feature called Brute Force protection which is included in the software.

SIPLock and the Brute Force settings have essentially the same core functionality, however there are a few differences:
- SIPLock provides a management GUI that allows for the manual whitelisting and blacklisting of IP addresses and subnet ranges
- SIPLock shows you any attacks on your system while the Brute Force settings are on/off without any visibility to what it is doing
- SIPLock emails system administrators on a daily basis when attacks are detected, and provides a summary of where the attacks came from, and how many attacks occurred

The only issue with leaving a pro or PBXtra system open is the chance of getting phantom VoIP calls because you are allowing all traffic to go to your system. This is the case for any VoIP device that is opened on the internet. If you want to limit the chance of getting unwanted VoIP calls then tighten firewall security to allow only the traffic you require. Ever since 5.2 was released, SIP passwords are always randomly generated and not the same as the MAC address. If you still aren't on 5.2 then all you need to do is contact your sales rep to push the upgrade assuming you are on compatible hardware.

Charles, Are you sure

Charles,
Are you sure about this, last I checked SIPLock was something like a $1,200 add-on.

SIPLock and Brute Force are

SIPLock and Brute Force are two different things. I'm not sure what the exact price of SIPlock is but Brute Force is included on PBXtra 2010.1.19 which will soon follow trixbox Pro.

Almost at the end of Q4

Charlie,

We're already at the end of Q4 and we still don't have 2.8.1 and the benefits associated. Does this mean that CE is dead, or is this just the regular Fonality delay?

By the way, I've tried a bunch of the other freepbx flavors out in the wild and I came back to CE, so I'm hoping for the community continuing.

I am curious, what benefits are in trixbox that made you come back? What was missing? Did you try PBX in a Flash and the FreePBX official distro?

Update broke it

I tried elastix and PIAF and freepbx and also plain vanilla asterisk and found that they weren't any easier to use and in the case of PIAF and freepbx, after updating asterisk stopped working and the admin panel broke. At least with Trixbox CE everything that I need works.

ETA

I would also like to see an eta on a new release/upgrade for trixbox CE.
One that comes with asterisk 1.8 and a more recent version of CentOS.

As it has been ages since any updates where released, I'm getting the feeling trixbox CE development is dead/dying...

What gave you the first clue?

Frankly I can't believe the site is still left up.

Why don't you try the new FreePBX distro? It's everything you asked for? The FreePBX project and the distro are alive and well. PBX in a flash is another well maintained current distro.

In it's day trixbox was a great FreePBX distro and had some cool tools. All of those tools and much more (including an updated comprehensive endpoint manager) are all in FreePBX. The Asterisk and FreePBX trixbox uses are so old you will be stunned to see all the new features.
