Most Basic Of connection Questions

Hi all, I am both new here and to asterix and to voip/pbx, please be gentle. Trying to set up for home office use.

My first question is pretty much to do with hardware. I have a adsl router with 2 fxo (to which I connect my analogue phone) ports and 4 lan ports. The router Zyxel 2602hwl, has the capabality of forwarding ports etc.. This part is later.

1 PSTN line. (POTS)

Do I connect a dedicated trix computer to the fxo ports or the lan ports. I do not want to buy more equipment if necessary.

Do I connect the pstn to the zyxel router which has connected by lan to the trix server? If so the sip registration on the router, should that be the trix box? Will it route my PSTN incoming calls to the pbx, or only voip calls.

These are probably very dumb qus but i need to start somewhere.

Thanks
Rog :-(

Re: Most Basic Of connection Questions

Well if what i think you are wanting to is right then this is how the set up would work.

You need to set up your trixbox server and get all configured on the network with a static up.

You then have to set up your voip service provider as trunks in your trixbox server, in order to do this you will need to set the portforwarding on the router for the sip ports to forward to trixbox.

You then need to set up the zyxel routers fxo ports to connect to the trixbox server as extensions on the trixbox machine and then plug your phones into the fxo ports on the router.

Obviously you are going to have to set indbound route settings and things in trixbox as well.

I also think you may have a problem port forwarding to the trixbox server. I know the draytek routers with fxo ports basically dont port forward all the ports due to the fact that they have the voip functionality built in to them so they try and take it all rather than forward it. Saying that all my voip trunks connected fine through it. Just not external extensions so you might be alright.

ps. If you dont need the functionality of the trixbox machine but you just want to use a voip service then you could just set your router to connected to your voip service provider and cut out the trixbox machine but i assume you know this much.

Rob.

Re: Most Basic Of connection Questions

An FXO port connects to an analog phone LINE. An FXS port connects to the PHONE itself. Looking at the specs, it has two FSX ports on it, and it's meant just as a registration device, nothing else. In that case, you have an Asterisk box, and what's known as an ATA (analog telephone adaptor), but no PSTN interface for your asterisk box.

You need an FXO interface for your asterisk box before you can get an outgoing line. The purpose of the Zyxel box is just to register with your Asterisk box and provide calling from the phone ports on it to your Asterisk box. If you want Asterisk to talk to an outside network (such as the PSTN), you need to get a card or external device for that.

Thankyou for your answer. Its what i was hoping for. This would mean that you can use the zyxel fxo port for the asterix/trixbox server. Does this mean you have successfully put in a similar type system?

I can forward (in theory) the ports to the server, i assume its 5060.

I currently use voip by the simple setup (as per your ps), as my wife says it works why change, but my answer is because its there. (Not unlike climbing mountains).

Rog

PS: I must compliment you on deciphering my post.

Re: Most Basic Of connection Questions

HI Alex, Much appreciate the reply....

So if i may get my self clear. If i port forward the router, Asterix may work, but only with sip (inbound/outbound) and not deal with the inbound analogue calls?
For that i would need an FXO device directly connected to an analogue line?

Thanks for the help :-?

As long as I'm understanding the hardware you're using, you're absolutely correct. You'll have to port forward the appropriate SIP (or IAX or H323) ports through your router to your Asterisk box. You'll then be able to program up your router's SIP settings to register as an extension on your Asterisk box. You could get a SIP or IAX PSTN provider and program that trunk into your Asterisk box to get PSTN connectivity if you want it.
