Has anyone used Elastix? What was your opinion?...how does it compare to Trixbox or other * distros?
ELASTIX
Why don't you check their forums to see what their own users are saying about it. You will learn much more than asking trixbox people for an opinion of another product.
Elastix seems solid and has a good bunch of developers. You really should check it out. As I said in another thread each distro has its own ups and downs. There is no absolute best. Each product has developers with a passion and a direction neither direction will satisfy every situation but between trixbox, elastix, asteriskNOW, astlinux admins paradise, and the dozens of others you may find a few that allow you to adapt to any situation..
Wow. Settle down. You know, I've been staying out of your, and by that I mean Fonality/Trixbox, way and the debate about the path you're on...but I have to say that your posts have gotten increasingly petty, sharp-tongued and clique-ish. What's up with that? ...the whole idea behind an open source project is that everyone learns from everyone....why segment and push users in a particular direction?
I posted here for a reason. I wanted a response from a Trixbox user's perspective...not someone who is already drinking the Elastic Kool-aid.
Thanks James.
As an aside...I'm a great fan of your products...I'm just curious...why didn't you make it to the "approved hardware" list for Trixbox Pro?
you have read a lot into Kerry post , i cant see anything wrong with kerrys post. i think that you read a lot into it , i too agree with checking out elastics forum.
We are working with the team at trixbox to make that happen. As are a good chunk of other vendors I imagine.
It seems there is a big pissing war going on right now in the asterisk world. In reality there are alot of projects as is the nature of open source. I would say the Asterisk development community is like a good dysfunctional family. We all love each other but we don't necessarily agree with everything each member does, so people find their own way. If you notice that the people you see here you will see in a variety of places. We all get along and no one is trying to slit anyones throat. As far as Kerry goes he is like the president. (not a specific president) He is a big name in the trixbox project. He has powers to do stuff but probably gets way more blame than he deserves. So if people attack you for things you have no control over you tend to go on the offensive. Realize kerry is part of a team and does not dictate the "what is" in trixbox. Decisions are made both as a project decision and as a business decision. BE NICE TO HIM he can be a valuable tool as long as you don't beat him in to seclusion.
WE LOVE YOU KERRY (no matter what those people say) :)
anyhow some people try to get stuff started but know the asterisk community is more like montel williams than jerry springer.
It's a good distro I have used it. Both TB and Elastix run off of the FreePbx GIU so there about the same. Elastix has a good faxing package.
have you been able to fax with decent reliability using elastix?
I have not tried the fax. Elastix is also doing a really good job with documentation on their website.
I am currently running it as I wait for a version of 2.3.0.x or 2.4 of Trixbox that has the updated Rhino in it. The current version of Elastix worked for me with the assistance of James. My comments are as follows: The GUI into Elastix and the logon look clean, It uses a secure https connection which makes me happy. The Freepbx is an older version and I have not received instructions yet on how to upgrade it. I have not been able to get the inbound fax to work with PSTN lines and their instructions. I have tried alot of things, but no luck. I would like to get it to work, but I am most likely going to go with the 2.4 release of Trixbox. I also could not get Freepbx/Elastix (I do not know which one is at fault) to prepend a "1" to my outbound trunk so that all of our Outlook long-distance calls get a "1" put on the front of the call. Other than that, it works and it installed like a Trixbox install.

I suggested reading their forums so you can see what people are really experiencing. If you read the posts here you find out what problems people are having, what peoples REAL opinions are. These forums are not filled with trixbox-kool-aid-drunk lemmings. The Elastix forum is the same way, look at their bug reports, look at their feature requests. Nothing else was meant by it.
I currently have a test box of Elastix and it is pretty good. I must say the interface is the best so far without their name (or Asterisk, FreePBX, etc) and logo thrown all over the place like kids scribbling on every bare space they can find (which is the case with Trixbox unfortunately) and everything (even FreePBX) is integrated into each other and not clunky and detached from each other. It is well packaged and cleaner than anything I have seen, it stands out because it actually looks business class. They have a single focus as in all efforts are focused at developing a true product as opposed to an opensource version versus a commercial version. The fax seems to work for the most part (at least they have a UI implementation of it). The system status page is innovative as well, it just needs to aut0-update as resources are used (similar to Windows Task Manager performance tab). They also have lots more innovative updates and features to come.
