DO NOT CONTINUE THIS DISCUSSION!!!
The use of the alternate codec is illegal in the United States and its use is violation of copyright law. This means you are in a public forum discussing using pirated software. Do not continue to discuss this here and do not use this codec as you would be breaking the law.
I hate to put it this way but you cannot discuss illegal activities here. Sorry.

Remember- it's a laptop. Even for two extensions, if it's constantly running, you'd expect it to last long?

and yes, gsm and ulaw is

and yes, gsm and ulaw is free but gsm sounds like you are talking on an at&t or tmobile cell phone. It's worth it just to buy the licenses
$10 per "channel" in use. If the IP phone isnt g729 compatible, when you make an external call it'll be using up two "channels"

We cannot recommend even

We cannot recommend even trying the unlicensed g729 codecs because of legal issues around the rights to use them. In other countries it is not an issue but in the US I do not think you can even legally use them for testing purposes.

CODECS 723 & 729

I recommend this codecs for asterisk 1.4, works, Intel P4 HT 3.0 or above
codec_g723-ast14-gcc4-glibc-pentium4-no-sse.so
codec_g729-ast14-gcc4-glibc-pentium4-no-sse.so

Works 100% fine for me

Good luck
(Don't forget to pay the "loyalities")

It would be hard to imagine that civil litigation would ever result from the infringement upon the IP of Sipro (I think they are the holder).

Doing the right thing is priceless, so pay for your licenses if used in a commercial environment.
