Trixbox CE embedded platform experiences / suggestions

Hi,

I'd like to get TrixBox CE installed on some sort of low-end embedded platform for a SOHO setup (just a couple of extensions, a couple SIP trunks, and analog PSTN support). My basic requirements are:
- Diskless (i.e. flash)
- Fanless
- Low Power
- Small footprint (not as critical)
- I'm OK using external gateway devices (I think) for FXS/FXO ports

I've looked at running plain-old asterisk on OpenWRT on a small router, but it seems like there are some concerns about whether that platform has enough horsepower to function reliably. But in general it seems like there should be something out there that will fit the bill, and maybe even have enough performance to handle transcoding (for at least a couple of calls).

I've searched the forums, and most of the posts I see on this topic are 1-2+ years old, and it seems like there might be some new options out there as far as hardware goes. So I was curious if anyone has any recent experiences and can recommend any particular platform for this type of environment...

Thanks in advance.

Well look to the right side of the screen..see the 888 voip store ad.

As you are asking about loading an ISO build, I will ASSUME you did not have the skill set to install from bare metal, beware most of the small form factor Motherboards are going to need drivers loaded and other tweaks, (trixbox will give you a working system out of the box) so unless you are wanting to learn all about linux / asterisk then buy the prebuilt.

Well the pricing on the trixbox micro appliance is a little above my threshold for pain for a SOHO (more HO than SO). It's not that the skill set is lacking, but it's more a matter of whether I want to bother with the time/effort of building myself. But I'm not averse to that approach. Assuming I'm willing to build the distro myself ... is there any recommendation for an embedded platform that works well with Trixbox CE?

Well there are MANY small motherboards out there but as for working with trixbox out of the box you will not find many if any.

I pointed you to the easy way (still would require some skills)
If you where thinking that you could pull this off on the cheap, you need to rethink your goals.
If you are looking to purchase a unit, then your first step is to forget about trixbox and start from a baremetal box and install what you need.

trixbox is an ISO built around intel / AMD hardware and it IS NOT designed for small weak boards and non-intel processors.

I have used small eeepc boxes myself and I would say they work for a small office or big home. The boxes cost 300.00 each BEFORE I built the PBX software for each one,
the end cost to the customer was $200.00 bucks per box for my work. So he had over 500.00 in each box, but he will never be able to reload them hisself.

He was happy with the boxes, but he finally understood what I had told him before I started...buy a dell small form factor...almost as quiet and uses a little more eletricity but is something he can control / load trixbox without help ($$).

For years when I was playing

For years when I was playing with Asterisk FreePBX my server at the house was an old IBM PIII Small Form Factor I pulled out of a junk pile. I put a new 40G drive in I had laying around. It drew only 45 watts!

So there are options. a PIII around 800Mhz and above can handle 3 sessions of g729 and about 20 extensions. I had at least 10 g711 sessions up on it at times.

There are cheap ways to go about this.
