trixbox v2.8.0.3 backup and restore

Dear All,

We recently had a motherboard failure on our trixbox and so I had to take the hard disk and put it into another, similar PC and set the IP Address, so, hey presto, we have a functional trix box!

All good... ...except my boss came to me and asked, "What disaster recovery procedure would we implement if the hard disk went down?"

So, I have been looking at doing backups and recoveries. This post was helpful:

http://fonality.com/trixbox/forums/trixbox-forums/trixbox-project...

I have found the backup module within the amportal.conf, but this requires you to have an FTP Server to upload to and the problems are:

1) Our router is switched off outside of office hours and
2) We have nothing on the network other than the phones and trixbox and
3) My boss does not like the idea of FTPing out to an external site because FTP is not secure.

With this in mind, I am thinking of doing manual backups of the trixbox.

If my restore strategy is to be able to build another trixbox using the install CD and then copy the configuration files from a backup, can I just backup the files that are shown in the GUI PBX->Config File Editor, i.e. all of the files in:

/etc/asterisk /var/www/html/panel /etc /tftpboot

and this would work, or is there much more to restore?

Or, is there a better method to do this?

Kindest regards,

QuietLeni

Re - your question; i'm not

Re - your question; i'm not sure but someone will with more knowledge on the subject will definately know... but figure as an idea - Could you not put another machine within your internal network and just put an ftp server on there to backup to?

Temporary FTP Server

DM3K,

Yes, I could put an FTP Server on the network for a manual backup, but I wouldn't be allowed to leave it there, for security reasons.

If I were to take a backup today and not make any trixbox changes for a year, would the backup be valid in a year's time? What would I lose if I did not back it up every day?

Is there any documentation for trixbox for backups?

Kindest regards,

QuietLeni

I would use the FreePBX

I would use the FreePBX backup utility. It creates a nice tarball you can use SCP to copy to another machine.

Turning the Internet off is an odd practice. I would educate your supervisor about real security and not the illusion of security.

Running the FreePBX utility (version) 2.6 will allow you to securely copy the backup file to another machine.

trixbox is based on FreePBX

trixbox is based on FreePBX 2.5 The latest 2.6 backup utility is the one you want.

http://mirror.freepbx.org/modules/release/2.6/backup-2.6.0.3.tgz

Download to a folder on your desktop then install with:

Install from PBXSettings/Module Admin/Install local module

We got hacked out of hours

SkykingOH,

We got hacked out of hours, so the link is switched off during that time (and we do not use it then anyway). We also put a load more security measures in place as well, so he's not being a numpty, but maybe temporally over-protective.

2 last questions remain:

1) All of the other machines are Windows machines. Where can I get an Windows SSH/SCP server from?

2) If I run the utility during the day and while the trixbox is running and receiving and making calls, will it affect the performance of the trixbox (it's a new dual-Core Celeron with 1GB RAM).

Kindest regards,

QuietLeni

Saturating the network would cause call quality issues if you transfer the file off. Running the backup local won't effect quality.

Thanks

SkyKingOH,

Thanks for the direction - I'm going to take a backup using tbm-backup onto a USB drive...
