I'm very new to Trixbox CE and I have a couple of 7960 phones ordered and on their way. These phones are loaded with SIP rev 7.4 already. I see that Cisco has revisions all the way up to 8.9 now. What's confusing me during my search for info is at what revision should I update the firmware and what revision is ok to leave as-is?

7.4 is a very stable release. So, I am not sure you want to rush out and update the phones.
Keep in mind that whatever Cisco has up at ftp.cisco.com is the latest free update, anything else requires a $10.00 service contract. Since the $10.00 gets you unlimited access to the Cisco web site it is a bargain.
Now when you install the phones make sure that you load the Cisco software package into the TFTP directory (use WinSCP) then run setup-cisco. In endpoint manager/general Cisco options set the software revison to match the code you loaded. Lastly make sure that you are using the trixbox for DHCP and have set the boot server options in dhcpd.conf. If all this is not right before you plug the phone in more than likely it will stop working.
I have come to the conclusion that unless you are familiar with tftp, dhcp and linux in general (so you can watch the logs) getting Cisco phones working is a struggle. More generic SIP phones like the Aastra and SNOM are much more friendly to trixbox.
I don't want to scare you off, my track record lately of 'talking people through' setting Cisco's up had been poor lately. Is is more of an art than a science.

Thanks for your input. The reason I'm going with the 7960 is because I've used them in the past when I worked at Dow Chemical and I liked the volume on them. I'm hearing impaired and it's next to impossible to find reviews/feedback on how loud a phone is, mostly just the quality of sound.
